DATE NIGHT SPORTS FLICKS FOR ALL
A fun article FOR RANDOM HOUSE’s word and film WEBSITE
DATE NIGHT SPORTS FLICKS FOR ALL
Sophia Henry
Sports Movies are a widely watched cinematic genre. You don’t have to love—or even understand—sports to love a Sports movie. Hollywood knows how to maximize a date night. Something for everyone. Notice I’m not wording this in a stereotypical, sexist way. Because I’m that girl. I’m that girl that LOVES sports. Did I love Major League because Charlie Sheen is uber-hot as Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn? No. I loved Major League because I’m interested in the inner workings and player dynamic of a pro sports team. (Charlie was the icing on the cake.)
Not all women hate sports. Not all men love them. So, guys, it could be your majorly awesome girlfriend who’s watching for the sports aspect of the flick, while you lean back and contemplate the meaning in the themes or the quality of acting.
Pop your own corn and snuggle up on the couch, because none of these movies are in theaters.
Comedy - Lighten the mood. Have some fun.
Fever Pitch
A workaholic thinks she’s found the perfect guy—then baseball season starts. There’s a part where Lindsey utters the most horrific words someone could say to a die-hard sports freak like Ben: “It’s only a game.” SILENCE
Happy Gilmore
Wannabe hockey player, Happy, gets cut from try-outs yet again and tries his hand at golf to help buy his grandma’s house. Hilarity ensues. Especially the legendary fight with Bob Barker.
Slap Shot
Yes, I used Slap Shot in a previous article, but that’s because it is the epitome of hilarity and F the world. For men and women. Sports fan or not. I will probably use it as an example in every article I wrote from now until my fingers fall off. It’s that awesome.
Feel Good - Feel the feels. Shed a Tear.
Hoosiers
Coach Dale has to prove his commitment to the town before the Myra, hardened English teacher will give him respect. There’s also a high school basketball team that goes to the Championship game.
The Natural
Roy Hobbs is the middle age nobody who gets his chance to play in the major leagues. This is the movie with the popular cinematic moment where the lights explode. That’s all I’m saying…
The Blind Side
True Story of Michael Oher, a homeless boy, who goes on to be All-American, First Round Draft pick and NFL Player with the help of a rich Southern lady and her family. You’re tearing up already.
The Mother of all Date Night Sports Flicks:
Jerry Maguire
It has Romance—Jerry and Dorothy. It has Bromance—Jerry & Rod. It has family values—Rod Tidwell’s relationship with his wife and family is so stinkin’ sweet! And it all takes place in the shark-infested world of sports agents.
This is not a complete list. In fact, I can think of at least twenty more movies that I’d snuggle up with a date and watch, but I’m a sports freak, so…
Let me know what you think. Throw some movies at me. Let’s have a watch-a-long. I took it one step too far didn’t I? Where’s the Vaudeville hook?
